The time to have fun with exercise begins now. This means this is the time to stop blaming a sedentary lifestyle, worsened by the COVID-19 lockdown, for recent tiredness and worn outlook.  Though COVID-19 is still out there, several countries are easing the lockdown. That is good news.  However, the bad news is that the full gym workout is still a bit suspicious.  Nonetheless, time to have fun with exercise shows you what is available.  As well as how to do it smartly and be safe.

Jogging And Walking Safest Form Of Exercise

Jogging and walking are still the safest forms of exercise in the ‘new normal’. Therefore, the next time you are driving in your car and see that same man jogging or walking by again, you may think about how dedicated he must be. That well may be the case, but consider for a moment the runner’s or walker’s perspective. Jogging or walking to him is not like going to work or changing a flat car tyre.  It is something that is enjoyed or he would not be doing it so regularly.

As hard as it is for some to conceive since too much jogging or walking is boring and not enjoyable. But a punishment.  However, those who are doing other activities regularly such as working out at the gym, biking, walking, swimming, etc, are having fun with that dedication as well.

Exercise Has To Be Long-Term To Benefit

Time to have fun with exercise

The key to getting benefits from exercise is to be in it for the long term. In order for people to continue to do an activity that improves their health, they must engage in the behavior often and on a regular basis.  Even if it is true that someone can do an activity for a couple of months and lose some unwanted weight. The fact is unless that exercise is continued, the excess weight will return. In the end, the benefits will be short-lived and would not do much for health over a lifetime.

Consequently, if physical activities are not continued, it will be hard to truly realise less disease, longer life, better moods, less stress and pain, fewer prescriptions, and better mobility. This is the reason why it is so important for people to find exercises that are something they enjoy doing.

How to Enjoy Exercise

OK, the lockdown has popularised virtual exercise. But nothing beats outdoor exercise with all the fresh air and the afterward glow. Or the feel-good experience of a gym workout. But at the end of the day, we are all different and motivated by various factors.  This means that there is no simple answer to making workouts fun.

So to begin with, it is definitely important to know what activities you do. Or do not enjoy or are not physically able to perform. Although the exercise may be good there is no obligation to partake. This is because healthy active people are constantly being told by others, “I desire to work out in the gym, but I am just too busy at the office”. Or “I guess I should start jogging again, but the last time I did, I was in pain for two days”.

After all, if they enjoyed these activities they would be doing them. At least once in a while. The bottom line is if you do not like to jog, do not feel that you need to be jogging to become healthier and more active. It just would not work.

How To Begin Exercise

You can begin to make time to have fun with exercise by looking at all the different types of activities you can engage in. This should be based on your physical limitations. For example, if you have bad knees, jogging may not be an activity to consider. Alternatively, you may want to look at swimming, bike riding, or other low-impact choices that do not put excessive pressure on your knees.

Then make a complete list of every activity that you can think of.  Discuss this with a fitness professional. Do not be afraid to pencil down safe new activities. If you want to go back to the gym, be sure to belong to a gym that strictly follows the operational protocol for reopening a business. And when you get there look at and try all of the different equipment or exercise choices.

And when you come across a new activity or suggestion, give it a try! Do not opt out of trying something new, even if it feels awkward at first.  Or if it takes time to become proficient. A little persistence and effort can lead to new paths for you and keep you motivated as well.  Once again, it is important to keep within the CDC guidelines for returning to the gym.

Variety Is The Spice Of Life

Another way to improve overall fitness and avoid burnout or boredom is to do more than one single activity.  In addition, do not always do the same thing every session. Mix it up. For example, you can go to the gym to lift weights, take a class, or use cardio equipment.  But be sure to do different routines, change weights, reverse the order of use, and take new classes.  Or use a different piece of equipment each week or so.

Be Disciplined About Exercise

The bottom line is to go ahead and feel obliged to work out, simply because you know it is important to become healthier from exercise. And be disciplined about doing something just about every day, for around an hour or so.  Since that is what it takes for you to enjoy real benefits over the long journey to fitness. So what are you waiting for? This is the time to have fun with exercise.
